The Device Manager hides devices that you may have installed on your system and later removed.

At the command prompt enter set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1

Alternately you can enter it under the Environment Variables by clicking START, then Control Panel, System, then finally the Advanced tab. Click the Environment Variables button. Then under System Variables click New, enter DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES and the value of 1.

Then open Device Manager and click View on the Menu, and choose Show Hidden Devices.

All of the non-working devices are there at your disposal.

Why would you want to do any of this? For one thing XP is most likely still loading the drivers and therefore unnecessary.
